How we produce our honey

01 Flowers produce nectar

Nectar is a sugary liquid secreted by flowers, which attracts insects as it’s a rich food for them

02 Bees collect the nectar

Bees collect nector from Manuka Flowers during summer

03 Bees seal cells with wax

The bees fly the nectar back to their hives and seal it into wax cells where it ripens into honey

04 We collect the Honey

Honey is extracted from the honeycombs and sent in large drums to factories

What is MGO

Methylglyoxal, the natural compound that makes Manuka honey special, its like the magic ingredient with antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. The quantifiable measurement obtained from the laboratory.

The antibacterial properties of honey are provided by hydrogen peroxide. In normal honey the hydrogen peroxide breaks down and the antibacterial properties are lost. Due to the compound MGO, the anti-bacterial activity remains even after the hydrogen peroxide has disappeared.

Manuka honey is a type of honey native to New Zealand. It’s produced by bees who pollinate the flower Leptospermum scoparium, commonly known as the manuka bush.

Manuka honey’s antibacterial properties are what set it apart from traditional honey.

Methylglyoxal is its active ingredient and likely responsible for these antibacterial effects.

Additionally, manuka honey has antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits.

In fact, it has traditionally been used for wound healing, soothing sore throats, preventing tooth decay and improving digestive issues.

Aside from where it was harvested, the nectar of the Manuka flower gives Manuka Honey its unique non-peroxide activity properties. The UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) rating number represents the unique signature compounds characteristic of real Manuka Honey, which ensures purity and quality. These compounds include the key markers of Leptosperin, DHA and Methylglyoxal (MGO).

When it comes to superfoods, raw honey is associated with health benefits. Manuka isn’t a raw honey, but it is specialized. It’s antibacterial and bacterial resistant. This means that bacteria shouldn’t be able to build up a tolerance to its antibacterial effects.

Manuka honey is said to be effective for treating everything from a sore throat to clearing up blemishes on your skin.

Other purported benefits of honey include:

  • helping heal cuts and scrapes
  • clearing infections
  • easing stomach aches
  • improving digestion
  • boosting the immune system
  • providing energy

UMF® strength ranges from 5+ to 20+, with 20+ indicating the highest level of beneficial compounds. The higher the number, the higher the concentration of these compounds, the more targeted the usage for common wellness remedies, which is why higher UMF levels also tend to have a darker color.

Manuka Honey is widely used to support digestive and immune health. It can help soothe coughs and sore throats too. Enjoy a delicious spoonful daily, or add to your tea, toast, yogurt, or smoothie as a daily superfood.

Certified UMF® Manuka Honey with a 10+ or higher rating is medical grade and therapeutic for the skin. It contains the beneficial compounds that provide Manuka’s unique topical antibacterial and health benefits, including support for wound healing, and helping treat acne and scarring.

Manuka Honey comes from the Manuka Flower, a scarce and natural resource found only in New Zealand. It is unique because it contains special health properties used to support digestion, health, and healing. In addition to the unique qualities it contains, the Manuka Flower has a limited crop production (roughly only 2-6 weeks a year) and is incredibly sensitive to seasonal weather conditions. It takes immense skill, planning and resources to harvest Manuka Honey (we told you some hives are only accessible by helicopter), which makes it much more expensive to produce than other types of honey – but only real Manuka Honey has the vibrant, wellness qualities it does.
